Round Midnight - Chalotte & Fred
HeyRUclipsrs,
Since I am very busy these days and cannot save time to shoot new videos, I thought I could share you with some recordings that I've made along the years with Charlotte.
Charlotte is an incredibly talented singers with whom I've been working for almost 20 years.
We are mostly playing our own music for which you'll find videos on my YT channel but we also cover some great jazz standards.
Here is 'Round Midnight played in Gb-.
Recording was probably made 12 years ago or so. Comping guitar was my Martin D35, now gone. Who said we can't play jazz with flattops? Solo guitar was made with my Gretsch Tennessee Rose '62 reissue.
Hope you'll enjoy it.
Cheers.

Something for Doug - Gibson ES-350 from 1955
Просмотров 1,3 тыс.6 месяцев назад
Hey Tubers! Here is a new tune of mine featuring my beloved ES-350 played through my Princeton. Be safe and take care. Tune played is a composition of mine entitled "Something for Doug". It's humbly dedicated to Doug Raney who was an immense guitar player to me. Three decaded ago, Doug released a composition called "Something's Up". It's a minor blues (in F if I'm correct) with a nice harmonic ...
30 Years Later - Gibson ES350

Hey RUclipsrs, Here is a new tune of mine called "thirty years later" that I'm playing with my Gibby ES350. This guitare was called "the poor man L5" when it came out in in the early '50s. It's a laminated top that works great for a dry jazz tone. Hope you'll enjoy the sound of it. Happy Xmas to you all. I Concentrate on You - Gibson Byrland 1983

Hey RUclipsrs, Here is a demo of a Byrdland, just lent by my good friend Karim. I had the opportunity to play it a couple of years ago, and it was stuck in my mind as a very good and responsive guitar. That's exactly what I've noticed again. A lot of dynamics in this jazz box. Probably even more than in my L5CES. Great guitar all in all. Recording chain: guitar - Fender Princeton handwired - Sh...
Verso Sera - Trio Bourgaud - Sereno - Viguier

Hello Tubers, Hey, that's something special, actually quite different than my other videos. This is a trio project I have with the great Mauro Sereno (bass, aka Mr. Sunnybass on RUclips) and Jm Viguier (guit solo). This is an original composition of mine that I wrote in Italian, the language of my grand-parents. Thanks Grand-Pa and Grand-Ma ! The title means " 'Round the Evening". This might we...

Hey RUclipsrs, New video out with my beloved ES-150. If I should only keep one archtop, she would be the one. She's just been serviced by Mikaël, my guitar tech, who's done a great refretting job. It's a joy to play thsi instrument. So inspiring for me. Recording chain: guitar-Fender Princeton (handwired) - Shure SM81 - DAW
I Should Care - Gibson Super 400 - Quilter 101 & Toob 6.5 GP cabinet

Hey RUclipsrs, New video out with my 1980 S400 paired with a Quilter 101 and a Toob 6.6 GP cabinet. Great tiny amp head cabinet association to go out gigging. Now, the tune. I Should Care is a very special tune to me. I remember hearing the Jimmy and Doug Raney version in the '80s and saying to myself "Now I want to learn jazz guitar". Jimmy's and Doug's version is just stellar, or maybe I'd ra...
There will never be another you - Gibson ES300 & ACUS One 8 amp

Hey RUclipsrs, New amp day! New video out demoing the sound of my new amp, ACUS One 8, with my Gibson ES300 (equipped with a Pete Biltoft Charie Christian pick up). I discovered ACUS amp a few time ago. They are designed for acoustic instruments and voice but get along very well with archtops. Hope you'lle like the sound of it. Jazz guitar sound - Demoing Toob 6.5 Cabs with Quilter 101 amp head

Hey RUclipsrs, New video out from a new series, entitled "Fred's Gear Vault" where I will demo some pieces of gear for jazz guitar. Today, I'm comparing 2 cabs that I acquired from Toob (Finland). They are the models 6.5 GP (guitar ported) and 6.5 BG (bass and guitar), both paired wit a Quilter 101 amp head. They both sound great but different...More low ends on BG, more defined and cutting sou...
I'm Old Fashioned Gibson L5C '53

Hey RUclipsrs, New video out with my Gibson L5C from 1953. Here, I am playing one of my favorite standards - I'm Old-fashioned which I discovered years ago with Chet Baker. There is a great version of him with Doug Raney (guitar) and NHOP (bass). Warmly recommended. The ending, from 2'11'' on, is a reminiscence of the immense John Abercrombie, but i've forgotten the tune I stole it from him. It...

Hey RUclipsrs, New video out where I am comparing my Gibson Super 400 CES (1980) along with my Gibson L5 CES (1996). Two great guitars with not so subtle differences in their sound. Hope you'll enjoy the video. Recording chain: Guitar - Fender Deluxe '68 Reissue - Shure SM57 - Digital Audio Workstation.

Hey RUclipsrs, New video out of my beloved ES-150 from 1938. I may own several great guitars but that one is just...my ideal. If I should keep just one it would be that one. Tune played is a old standard that discovered many years ago thanks to the great Chet Baker. Warmly recommended version! It's You Or No One - Gibson L5C 1953
They sound pretty much the same.
S400 - more body; L5 - brighter. I'll take the S400 thank you very much.
Wise choice!
its for sell¿¿
Thanks but no. Unique guitar. It stays where it is ;)
This is the most close to Barney Kessel's sound guitar I 've ever heard !!! Magic ...
A "floating" Charlie Christian pickup cannot sound like a true one ! Because no long cobalt magnet under... But your sound is really mellow.
S400 !!!!
Are guitars ever set up with two Charlie Christian pickups ?
Oh so nice, thank you very much !
Oh so nice. This might be the sweetest version of Misty I've ever heard. Love the organ too ! That instrument has the best tones - just excellent ! My compliments to the luthier. And the playing is just nice as spice !
Thank you!
The pickups sound so mellow. But then so does the music. An amazing collection of vintage Gibsons there ... All very nice !
Thank you PJ. Best and take care.
Your playing and the guitar sounds great! I just bought an Emperor based on hearing you and a couple other videos. Did you have to drill any new holes to install the Kent Armstrong pickup? I’m considering the upgrade. Thanks!
Hello Gary. Glad I could help. No big work required to mount a new Kent Armstrong except a couple of tiny drills on the side of the deck where you will attach the microphone. Best and take care.
This is my kind of guitar, I love P90s
Both guitars are very nice 👍🏻
What year is the 150? Is that the original PU? Thanks. Wonderful comparison- nice playing, too. 🙏
1938. Everything original except pickguard. Cheers.
@@FredArchtop 👍🙏
Bro, that was BEAUTIFUL!! YOU, can play jazz on anything. You've always been amazing Fred. Charlotte's voice is so soft and smooth. Just like your playing. The perfect match. Loved it buddy. Joe D
Joey, My buddy. Always great to read from you. That Martin is my "I should never have sold it" guitar. But it's just a guitar after all...Bro, I miss your videos! Please post more!
Hi Fred, really nice! I like the comping of the Martin and the chords arrangement. Beautiful duo, well played!!!
Thansk Belem!
Enjoyed that very much. I liked the sound of the Martin, specially in this context
I'm glad you enjoyed. A Martin for jazz is quite unusual, but since it's jut guitar and voice, the Martin brings a rich harmonic background. It probably wouldn't work so well with a more conventional jazz combo like a trio or 4tet.
@@FredArchtop Totally agree.
BRAVO! very nice.
excellent
Beautiful playing and super tone. Did you change the tailpiece? To which one? Brief partial glimpse it doesn’t look like the famous original, Frequensator.
Hi. Original except the floating PU. Tailpiece is the well-known frequensator. Cheers.
L5 had a stronger attack ...Very little difference in the ear but sentimental effect ...Kind of more melanholick , expressive and woody tone . The S400 best luxurius sound ...Metal bridge vs a wood one ? ...
Agreed on all your comments. I have a 175CC for which I have recently flipped the TOM bridge for a wooden one. Indeed, the sound is wayyyyyyyy smoother. Cheers.
Both awesome. Too many factors to consider. Then it's a matter of practicality and uses. The context
Thank you, i loved it!!!!😊🖐
I have one of these guitars with a CC floater (installed on the neck like the stock pickup) that Pete Biloft made for me and I'm still not able to get the sound I want. I'm using the stock volume and tone pots. The sound is more "acoustic" than I like. Any suggestions?
All guitars have their own pitch and these Epiphone Emperor guitars equipped with floaters usually have a lot of high ends. You can probably attenuate what you hear as an acoustic-type soundwith your map equalization. Other than that, there isn't much you can do. Hope this helps.
JONATHAN STOUT should play this model
WoW What a Great guitarist❤ Wish i could do that😊 Thanks very much!
Hi Fred, hope you are doing well. Please, can you tell me if you use the Fender Medium picking with the tip, or one of the rounder cormers?
Hi Carlos. I use both. The rounder part is nice to get a mellower sound, but if you have to play fast, then the tips becomes easier, unless you are Pat Metheny ;)
@@FredArchtop Thank you!
Really delightful. Miss these videos from Fred
I'll be back ;)
Beautiful playing! Both guitars sound great. I wouldn't complain if you wanted to give me either one of 'em! I'd graciously accept it!
Mighty fine
thank god😂 it is the only video i found using acus amp for jazz guitar.does it fit?what do you think about its sound for jazz guitar?
Hello. Yes, ACUS amps are very good for a clean jazz sound. They are extremely well made and the association speaker + tweeter delivers a very trustful sound of your guitar. I would say it's a great amp if you're looking for a very detailed woody sound, especially if you are using an acoustic archtop amplified with a floater (Johnny Smith) or an external microphone. On the contrary, if you're looking for a Fender sound (Deluxe or Princeton etc.), then it's certainly not the right choice. Hope this helps.
I’m very late to this but oh my, what a beautiful tone from player and pickup.
Never too late :) You'll find other videos with this guitar on my YT channel.
This is beautiful
Thanks Alberto !
Great performance and what a beautiful guitar.
What amazing tones! Great playing too. I subscribed
Luvvly Jubbly 😊
Nice playing. The attack of the L5 works better for me. Both sound sweet.
All gorgeous: The playing, the sound, the guitars, the pickups, and especially the socks. If I had socks like that, I too could play like Wes Montgomery.
Thanks for this comparison, I've enjoyed it many times, great guitar playing and a wonderfully gentle tone. I'm happy to own these two guitars too. If I set the tone knob to three, they sound almost the same, similar as in the video. However, when I turn the tone knob up to 7 or 8, the differences become noticeable, especially with excellent tube amps like the Deluxe Reverb or a Princeton: 17" vs 16" body, maple vs mahogany, 25.5" vs 24.75" scale.
Fred, BEAUTIFUL playing, and that superb TONE! It is lush, deep, gorgeous. I've got the same Emperor Regent (1996) in Sunburst. IMHO, hands down the tone from these is every bit as good as a nearly priceless Gibson - perhaps even better! Thanks for your playing!
do you know what what size vol/tone pots and cap were used? sounds sweet
👍🏾
Very nicely played …..beautiful instrument and sound
Compared to the S400, the L-5 sounds a little “muffeled”. But both are fantastic. Thank you !
There's a 1979 ES-175CC on Reverb that I'm thinking about buying for $4,600. Any words of wisdom when buying a guitar like this?
The one in Canada I guess. Buying on reverb is always a bet. Ask for more pics, how is the fretboard, electronics etc. And enjoy if you pull the trigger! Cheers.
I'd love to take that L5C off your hands anytime you'd be willing to part with it. Let me know. Best wishes.
Thanks but no, thanks. Probably my best guitar around, along with my ES-150 and my '40 L5. Cheers.
I'l love to take your L5C off your hands anytime you willing to part with it. Let me know. Best wishes.
Your playing is great but the guitar still sounds thin and bright even with the new pickup. Same issues with my Epi Joe Pass.
Love your 175. Let me know if you ever decide to sell it. I'm interested.
Thanks Dave. No project to sell it as for now. I will let you know if ever. Best and take care.
